Akumal “looking great”
Nathan Hebenstreit has just returned home to Colorado after a week spent on the beaches of Akumal on the Riviera Maya.
"Akumal and south was looking great," he told me. "A lot of work has been done and things are looking good.
"In Tulum you could hardly tell a hurricane had just been through, although Cancun was still pretty bad; many of the trees were stripped and brown…
"Cancun airport was much quieter than usual but the tourists were still arriving."

I am so glad I found your blog. My wife and I are headed for Playa del Carmen in a few days on Sunday the 18th and until reading your blog never really felt comfortable that we would be able to enjoy the holiday because of the effects of Wilma.
I did notice however that you have very little information about Playa del Carmen.
What do you think? Should I have a little cautious optimism?

There appears to a fair amount of building work going on in Playa del Carmen. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between the work being done to repair damage inflicted by Wilma and the brand new buildings going up.
See Ellen Field’s report – including Playa – from Dec 6th.
Bloomberg journalist Doug Alexander returned from Playa del Carmen last Sunday (Dec 11th). He was impressed with progress and told me in an email that "hotels seem to be restored and the shops up and running."
