Beach recovery reaches the Marriotts

March 3rd, 2006 by Steve Bridger filed under Cancún Beach Recovery, Cancún, Photos

The beach recovery teams are currently working in front of the Grand Melia Cancún (scheduled to re-open at the end of this month) and the CasaMagna Marriott (June 1st).

Jim Wehrle took this photo today from in front of the Palace hotel (no beach whatsoever). Looking south, the JW Marriott (May 1st) can clearly be seen… and in the distance, the earth moving equipment working the beach at the Grand Melia.

This photo shows the bulldozers working in front of the CasaMagna Marriott.

The second dredger - the Barent Zanen - has also now arrived, but I expect progress to slow a little as this stretch of the beach was washed away completely.

does this mean that the beach recovery will be going faster than the newest update on beach recovery you posted steve? i sure hope so. im stayin on the stretch that has NO beach

  2. Jason Young Says:

I’m staying at the Marriott end of June, so I’m happy to see they are working on the beach already. Looks like they still need to create new retaining walls though…

  3. Laura Says:

I would like to know what the beach at the Park Royal is like currently and when it is realistically going to be completed.

Please email me either with an answer if you have one, or with possibly some direction as to where to find an answer.

thanks in advance. i truely appreciate it.

    sincerely laura lanzoni

Chaz - the beach recovery has indeed been making amazing progress… so far. Even with two dredgers working 24/7, I’m loathed to make rash predictions - especially given that the crews are beginning to tackle to worst hit stretches of beach (or ex-beach). Fingers crossed. I’ll better be able to assess the situation in a few days time…and will of course relate what I know here.

Jason - there should be plenty of time for the Marriott.

BTW, thanks for the site, Steve!! I’m not really worried at all about the beach, I just hope the hotel doesn’t push back their reopen date because of some other issue. Right now they are supposed to open June 1st. I can’t worry too much though, I got a great deal on a week there compared to last year!

Steve, We are coming down on March 23rd and staying (4th spring break in a row) at the Avalon Baccara.

We know there is NO BEACH whatsoever as my nephew just got back 3 days ago.

Just wanted to say "thanks" for your site. I will keep checking until we leave to check the beach recovery progress. We are not expecting a beach, but we will be thrilled if there is even a tiny one.

    Thanks again.

    all right thanks alot steve!!!

Steve, you are the man!! I appreciate your updates - keep up the good work. I’m surprised to see hotel demoliton going on. I see that there are at least 3 hotels being demolished, with one resort stating they will build a 15 story facility by the end of 2006… It seems that Cancun is changing at a pretty fair pace - can you give additional info on the building being demolished, and what will replace them.

    Thanks!

  9. Steve Bridger Says:

Sandy - I’ve brought forward my guesstimates by a few three days or so. They are making impressive progress.

  10. Rachel Says:

Thanks for all the information that you share.

My daughter and I come to Cancun every summer for a week. The city and the people have a special place in our hearts.

It is wonderful to be able to see what is happening in the recovery.

Can’t wait to see with my own eyes, the middle of May.

    Keep up the good work.

  11. Steve Bridger Says:

Rachel…thank you. I’m so grateful to you all for the positive feedback.

If I haven’t answered your particular question, it’s because I’m still working on it…

Hi Steve, Just found out about this after wilma updated website of yours. Thank you so much!

We will be staying at the JW Marriott with our 4 children on June 3rd. Just seen your photo of this "NO" Beachfront property. Not sure what to do, from all the info I have gathered I know they are working hard to get it back and running.

Just wondering if I should consider another hotel? My kids love the beach and it would be disappointing if they cant just walk out to one.

Any additional comments would be appreciated.

    Concerned mom of four, Julissa

  13. Steve Bridger Says:

Julissa - I think you must’ve missed this photo (taken on March 5th). A much better scenario for your family vacation, I reckon! (The JWM is the taller building - just past the CasaMagna in the foreground).

The JW Marriott is scheduled to re-open on May 1st.

  14. Julissa Atkins Says:

Steve, Thank you for the prompt reply. I am happy to see the progress on the JW, I just felt a great sense of relief with the March 5th photo you have provided. THANK YOU!!

We are so excited to be able to come out to ‘Can’t-Cun’, as my 2 year old daughter calls it!

Best of luck to you all… keep up the great work, and see you soon!

    Julissa

  15. Ellen Says:

Hi Steve, I have a reservation for the JW Marriott for May 18. I just read that they have moved their opening from May 1 to May 15. I am wondering if I should book a back-up reservation. What are your thoughts? Thank you!

  16. Wayne Says:

Have reservations for the Oasis Beach on 4/18 - 4/25

Just wanted an update on the motel and the beach there.

  17. Steve Bridger Says:

Ellen - the JWM’s website says they have "a goal to re-open on May 15th…," but does not seem to discount another possible slippage. I do suggest you call their Central Reservations office at (800) 228-9290 for advice.

  18. Sasha Halter Says:

Steve, the Casa Magna just pushed their re-open date from June 1 to June 21. We’re booked through cheapcaribbean.com on June 27. I really do not want to be bumped to another hotel (because I’m unsure where they’ll send us).

I’m feeling a bit anxious. Do you have any inside knowledge if it appears they will make their new schedule? I’ve called Marriott and cheap caribbean and of course - no answers.
